Methodology
Salary Calculator Methodology and Sources
The MedDeviceJobs.com Salary Calculator estimates current U.S. market compensation for selected medical-device roles using occupational wage data, industry research, employer salary disclosures, and documented modeling assumptions.
About this calculator
The MedDeviceJobs.com Salary Calculator provides an estimated market-compensation range for selected jobs in the U.S. medical-device industry.
The result is an informational estimate based on occupational wage data, industry compensation research, publicly disclosed salary ranges, and modeling assumptions. It is not a job offer, compensation recommendation, appraisal of an individual’s personal value, or guarantee of what any employer will pay.
Compensation varies substantially between employers and positions. Factors not fully captured by the calculator may include an employer’s compensation philosophy, the precise responsibilities and scope of a position, individual performance, company performance, equity awards, benefits, negotiation, travel requirements, product maturity, funding, profitability, local labor supply, and unusual market conditions.
For these reasons, the calculator reports a range rather than claiming that a person is worth one exact amount.
What the estimate represents
Nonsales positions
- Estimated annual base-salary range
- Estimated annual cash-compensation range
- Estimated market midpoint
“Annual cash compensation” generally means base salary plus an estimated annual cash bonus. It does not include equity or stock awards, employee benefits, employer retirement contributions, sign-on or retention awards, relocation assistance, severance, expense reimbursements, overtime, shift differentials, or other special payments.
Sales positions
- Estimated base salary
- Target variable compensation
- On-target earnings, or OTE
- Estimated realistically expected total cash compensation
OTE is the sum of base salary and target variable compensation assuming 100% achievement of the applicable sales target or quota. OTE is not guaranteed compensation. Actual sales earnings may be materially lower or higher depending on quota attainment, commission-plan terms, accelerators, decelerators, thresholds, product mix, territory quality, account assignments, sales-cycle timing, returns, chargebacks, company performance, and other factors.
All amounts are stated in U.S. dollars and represent annualized compensation unless otherwise noted.
Positions covered by the model
Each family contains supported specialties and responsibility levels. Some medical-device positions may overlap more than one family. Users should select the family and level that most closely match their actual responsibilities—not necessarily their official title.
The model is intended primarily for employees of medical-device manufacturers and closely related organizations. It may be less accurate for consulting firms, hospitals, distributors, pharmaceutical or biotechnology companies, contract-only positions, academic institutions, government employers, or organizations whose compensation practices differ materially from medical-device manufacturers.
Primary data sources
The model draws from multiple independent sources rather than treating any single salary website or survey as definitive.
Government wage data
The primary quantitative anchor is the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics program, particularly the May 2025 data for NAICS 339100: Medical Equipment and Supplies Manufacturing.
Relevant BLS occupations include biomedical, mechanical, electrical, software, industrial, and other engineers; engineering managers; production managers; logisticians; purchasing professionals; marketing professionals; technical and scientific sales representatives; financial professionals; human-resources professionals; and medical-equipment repairers.
The May 2025 wage anchors were normalized to the calculator’s 2026 market date using approximately 3.1% private-industry wage growth reported by the BLS for the year ending June 2026. The model then compared those adjusted figures with more recent surveys and salary disclosures. That adjustment is already incorporated into the model and is not applied again when a calculation is performed.
OEWS provides occupational wage estimates, not a medical-device salary table for every exact title. It also does not separately identify several important medical-device functions, including all regulatory, quality, clinical, product-management, and medical-affairs specialties. Additional sources are therefore required.
Professional and industry sources
The model also considers current salary ranges disclosed in job postings from medical-device employers, including companies such as Boston Scientific, Johnson & Johnson MedTech, and Stryker. Job-posting ranges are used as corroborating evidence rather than being treated as direct measures of typical incumbent compensation. Published hiring ranges may be broad, may cover several geographic pay zones, and do not establish where within the range a successful candidate will be hired.
MedDeviceJobs.com is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by the BLS, RAPS, ASQ, RepVue, MedReps, the Medical Science Liaison Society, or any employer referenced in the research. Trademarks and source names belong to their respective owners.
How the calculator works
1. Career family and level
The calculator first selects a national base-salary midpoint for the chosen career family and responsibility level.
- Entry or Associate: Developing proficiency and completing work under meaningful guidance.
- Professional or Specialist: Independently completing defined projects and solving routine-to-moderately complex problems.
- Senior: Owning complex projects, mentoring others, or serving as a recognized subject expert.
- Staff, Principal, or Lead Individual Contributor: Influencing technical or functional direction across teams without primary people-management responsibility.
- Manager: Directly managing employees and having responsibility for delivery, hiring, and performance.
- Senior Manager: Managing managers, a large team, or a complex program or subfunction.
- Director or Associate Director: Owning a function, site, portfolio, major program, strategy, or budget.
- Vice President or Head of Function: Holding material enterprise-level or business-unit strategic, budgetary, and organizational responsibility.
Because employers use titles differently, the calculator prioritizes actual responsibility over title. A “Director” without meaningful functional, strategic, budget, or organizational responsibility may align more closely with a senior individual-contributor or senior-manager level.
2. Relevant experience
Years of experience and level are not treated as two independent seniority increases. Doing so would double-count experience because higher levels ordinarily already assume greater experience.
Each level therefore has an expected experience range. Experience within that range produces no separate adjustment. Experience below the expected range reduces the midpoint by approximately 1.2% per year, up to a maximum reduction of 6%. Experience above the range increases the midpoint by approximately 0.6% per year, up to a maximum increase of 6%.
3. Medical-device experience
- No medical-device experience: 0.97 multiplier
- Less than two years: 0.99
- Two to five years: 1.01
- Six or more years: 1.04
This adjustment is deliberately limited because industry tenure overlaps with general experience and job level.
4. Specialty
Some specialties receive modest family-specific adjustments when available evidence indicates materially different labor demand, technical requirements, or compensation. Examples include software and embedded engineering, electrical engineering, software quality and cybersecurity, design assurance, Class III/PMA regulatory work, combination products, SaMD/AI regulation, clinical strategy, digital product management, and complex imaging or robotic field service.
Specialty adjustments generally range from 0.88 to 1.18.
5. Company size and stage
- Early-stage startup: 0.95
- Small established company: 0.97
- Midsize established company: 1.00
- Large or global company: 1.04
These adjustments concern cash compensation only. Startups and publicly traded employers may offer equity or long-term incentives that materially change the economic value of a compensation package. The calculator does not estimate the value, vesting probability, dilution, liquidity, tax treatment, or future performance of equity.
6. Education and certifications
A relevant master’s degree or MBA may add up to approximately 2%, and a relevant doctorate or clinical degree may add up to approximately 4%, when that education is useful to the selected role. A material role-relevant certification may add approximately 2%.
Education and certification adjustments are capped at a combined 4%.
7. Geographic adjustment
The calculator adjusts compensation according to cost of labor, meaning observed differences in what employers pay for relevant work. It does not use consumer cost of living as a substitute for compensation.
Geographic multipliers were created from May 2025 BLS median wages for an 11-occupation professional and technical labor-market basket. For each state or supported metropolitan area, the model calculates a weighted geometric average of local wages relative to national wages. At least six occupations must have usable local data.
State results use a shrinkage factor of 0.55 and are limited to 0.88–1.16. Metropolitan results use a factor of 0.60 and are limited to 0.86–1.20. A supported metropolitan factor takes precedence over the state factor. Other locations use the applicable state factor. A genuine national pay band uses 1.00.
The calculator currently includes geographic data for all 50 states, the District of Columbia, available U.S. territories, and 80 large metropolitan areas.
For remote positions, home-location pay uses the employee’s market, office-linked pay uses the office’s market, and a true national pay band uses 1.00. Remote work does not automatically receive a universal premium or discount.
8. Range construction
After applying the supported adjustments, the calculator creates a base-salary interval around the estimated midpoint. Depending on level, the range generally extends approximately 13%–20% below and above the midpoint.
This interval is a modeled market range. It is not represented as a formal 25th-to-75th percentile, confidence interval, or prediction that a particular percentage of employees earns within the range.
For nonsales roles, estimated annual cash compensation is produced by adding a level-based target bonus assumption. Bonus assumptions generally range from approximately 5% for entry-level work to 35% for vice-presidential roles. Executive roles may use a separate assumption.
Medical-device sales methodology
Medical-device sales is modeled separately because ordinary salary-plus-bonus calculations do not adequately represent commission-based compensation.
The model uses separate national anchors for Associate Sales Representative; Territory Manager or Sales Representative; Senior or Executive Sales Representative; Strategic or Key Accounts; Regional Sales Manager; Area Director or Senior Sales Director; and Vice President of Sales or Commercial Leader.
Product categories include disposables and consumables; diagnostics and laboratory products; general medical devices; digital health and software; surgical products; capital equipment; imaging and robotic systems; cardiovascular implants; and orthopedic implants and spine products.
Product category primarily affects variable compensation and has a much smaller effect on guaranteed base salary. Geography applies fully to estimated sales base pay but at only 35% strength to target variable compensation.
Realistically expected sales compensation is calculated using a level-based attainment assumption and the user’s description of the territory: ramp or new, challenged, typical, established or strong, or top-decile.
Territory descriptions are inherently subjective. Accelerators, thresholds, caps, account reassignments, quota changes, split commissions, and company-specific plan rules can cause actual compensation to differ substantially.
The expected sales range generally models variable compensation from approximately 55% to 115% of target, in addition to the estimated base range. Exceptional performers may earn more, while representatives who miss minimum thresholds may earn less.

Model guardrails
- Nonsales base salary is generally limited to $35,000–$525,000.
- Nonsales annual cash compensation is generally limited to $800,000.
- Sales base salary is generally limited to $45,000–$425,000.
- Sales OTE is generally limited to $65,000–$750,000.
- Modeled expected sales compensation is generally limited to $900,000.
- Experience adjustments are limited to –6% through +6%.
- Geographic adjustments are capped.
- Education and certification adjustments are capped at a combined 4%.
- Nongeographic adjustments are generally capped at a combined 0.88–1.15.
A guardrail does not mean that compensation outside these amounts is impossible. It means the calculator is not designed to estimate unusual outliers reliably.
Statistical confidence and limitations
Evidence quality differs by career family. Government data and occupational mappings are strongest for engineering, manufacturing, field service, operations, supply chain, marketing, and many corporate functions. Evidence is moderately strong for quality and regulatory affairs because professional-association data and employer disclosures supplement related government occupations.
Clinical affairs, medical affairs, product management, sales specialties, and executive compensation have greater uncertainty because titles and responsibilities vary, samples may mix medical devices with pharmaceutical or biotechnology employers, and incentive or equity compensation may be substantial.
- NAICS 339100 does not contain every company commonly described as medtech.
- Salary surveys may have membership, response, recency, and self-selection bias.
- Compensation websites may combine different titles, locations, experience levels, and definitions of total compensation.
- Posted salary ranges may be wider than the range actually used for a particular candidate.
- BLS occupational categories do not correspond perfectly to employer-specific medical-device titles.
- Geographic wage differences can change as hiring markets and remote-pay practices evolve.
- The calculator cannot evaluate the quality of an individual’s work, professional reputation, negotiation ability, customer relationships, internal equity, or competing offers.
- Economic conditions and employer budgets may change faster than annual data sources.
- Compensation can fall outside the displayed range without making the estimate or the actual compensation necessarily improper.
Fair-pay and nondiscrimination statement
The calculator does not request or use race, color, religion, sex, pregnancy status, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, genetic information, or other legally protected characteristics.
Its output must not be used to justify unlawful pay differences or replace an employer’s legal obligations regarding equal pay, nondiscrimination, reasonable accommodation, wage-and-hour compliance, or applicable salary-transparency requirements.
An estimate below or above someone’s existing compensation is not evidence, by itself, of lawful or unlawful pay practices.
Appropriate use
The calculator is intended to provide general market context for job seekers, employees, and other members of the medical-device community.
Users should consider additional information before making an employment or compensation decision, including the actual job description, employer-published salary ranges, benefits, retirement contributions, bonus or commission-plan documents, equity terms, travel and on-call requirements, competing offers, recruiter feedback, and appropriate professional advice.
Employers should not use the calculator as the sole basis for setting an individual employee’s compensation, conducting a pay-equity analysis, classifying a position, determining exempt or nonexempt status, or complying with employment laws.
